Abruzzo Enduring Traditions Tour
Days/ 4 Nights
Your private chauffeur will pick you up in Rome to transfer to your Villa in the heart of Abruzzo region. En route stop in Tivoli to visit the gorgeous Villa d'Este and its gardens. The 2-hour ride to Abruzzo along the mountain highway A24, is one of the most scenic you can come across in Italy. Late afternoon, check in at your 5 century old restored medieval palace.
Your tour starts with a breathtaking drive through the Sirente Velino National Park. Arrive in a
typical mountain farm to learn the ancient traditions of manufacturing local produce. Starting with the
hand-milking sheep, hand milling wheat, or hand dyeing wool using
local plants and flowers, to cheese making, bread making, a true
enduring Abruzzo traditions workshop. The farm is sitting on a plain surrounded by gorgeous mountain scenario and the balance of the day you can choose and optional easy and scenic bike ride
or horse back ride.
Today, you will visit Rocca Calscio, a 9-century old
fortress standing on top of a mountain and with a breathtaking unobstructed view
over the whole region. Then Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Castel del Monte, 2 tiny medieval villages
which have been exquisitely restored to be awarded as few of the most beautiful villages in Italy and have staged some international movies (Ladyhawke, The name of the Rose, The American...)
Today we visit a Saffron farm in the Navelli Valley. The saffron is locally produced for over 6 centuries. Handcrafted in each step of the production, the Navelli Saffron is one of the most
exquisite and valuable in the world. It takes about 200 handpicked flowers, to make 1 gram of saffron, sometimes referred as "Red Gold". In the farm we will also visit a
vineyard in a new emerging wine region, producing champagne. After lunch, a visit to Bominaco, an amazing mediaeval monastic settlement, whe you can also enjoy wonderfully dramatic frescoes (done by three monks in the 1200s) covering walls and ceiling.
